There was even a peculiar genre of farewell letters, letters of testament which were written in advance and carried with them with a note: "In case of my death, please send to such and such an address". In depth of thought and feeling, many of them can compete with philosophical treatises. But in ordinary letters from the front no less reflections on the theme of life and death, because each of them could be the last... Here, for example, is a typical enough statement of common Soviet soldier: "I learned to understand: the war can take my life, my life, at any moment. A man in war begins to appreciate every moment given to him by fate. The little things, unnoticeable at other times, take on a special significance.
